Our history
A heritage that refused to go silent
In the dark, blockaded winters after the Soviet collapse — 250 grams of bread a day, no electricity, rooms near freezing — a group of women kept gathering to sing.
Their choir had dissolved in 1992. For two years they rehearsed anyway. In 1994 they voted soprano and musicologist Hasmik Vardanyan their maestra, and Yerevan Voices was reborn — carrying forward a repertoire no one else in Armenia performed.

Arthur Veranyan founds the Yerevan Chamber Choir.
- 1992
The choir dissolves after Veranyan emigrates to the U.S.
- 1994
Hasmik Vardanyan re-establishes the ensemble as Yerevan Voices.
- 1997
Wins the Best Performance Prize, International Choral Festival, Brive, France.
- 2015–17
Launches "Our Home" and "Music for Yerevan," bringing concerts to orphanages and Yerevan's Chamber Music Hall.
- 2022–23
"Saving History," a documentary on the choir's lineage, goes into production.
- 2024–25
Four new heritage programs launch across Armenia's regions.
- 2025
Performs Gurdjieff–de Hartmann repertoire at UCLA's Gurdjieff Armenia conference, Los Angeles.
- Today
A member of the world's largest choral organisations, still the only women's chamber choir in Armenia.

The people behind the voices
Hasmik Vardanyan
Choirmaster & Artistic Director
Hasmik Vardanyan is a musicologist and conductor with over three decades of experience in teaching, choral direction, and concert organization. Trained at the Romanos Melikyan State Music College and the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan, she led the "Yerevan" Women's Chamber Choir from 1994 to 2001, earning recognition at the "Orchestrada" International Festival in France.
In 2007, she reorganized the choir as "Yerevan Voices" and co-founded the "Yerevan Art" Foundation, which she continues to lead. Under her direction, the choir has performed across Armenia and abroad — from sacred concerts at historic monasteries to the "My Armenia" Festival and, most recently, the "Cantare in Toscana" festival in Italy. She has received the "Gr. Narekatsi" commemorative medal from Armenia's Ministry of Culture and taught at several institutions, including the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinema.
